This quilt began as a personal challenge to emulate the compelling art of one of my favorite Modern artists: Mark Rothko. “A Study of Rothko in Fabric” grew out of a desire to create a quilt that is resemblant of his art. Though seemingly simple, Rothko’s paintings are deeply complex in color, brushwork, form and vision. My hope was to demonstrate that same complexity using scrap fabric as the media. I use upcycled fabric from thrifted men’s shirts in all my quilts; this quilt is no exception, with the majority of the navy block constructed with shirt fabrics (and there’s some in the orange block, too!) In addition to shirt fabrics and scrap fabric from my own projects, I incorporated secondhand fabric from the scrap bins of generous friends and family. The red border/sashing was once a shirt and the RSS selvage was the perfect blue—which made me laugh.
