Absent" was inspired by the classic overlapping clam shell pattern. The blunted corners of the rectangular blocks make this quilt simple to construct with no curved sewing and results in a retro looking motif. While the repetition of the main "Scale" block creates a pleasing design, the break in the pattern illustrates the void left by the subtraction of one. In particular, it symbolizes the absence of a young man who did not live long enough to see an era where he might have found acceptance and community. His being absent is keenly felt.
