This asymmetrical quilt block was created from a modified 16-patch star to explore the illusion of color transparency. The blocks appear to have intersecting transparent planes, creating overlapping and merging colors. The challenge was to find three colors to create the transparency illusion using only the solid-colored scraps I had on hand. Some color pairings are more successful than others, but I loved the challenge. The exercise of creating color transparency is from Josef Albers book, Interaction of Color. Albers focuses on human color perception as the ultimate tool for artists, and his book is filled with experiments used to help students fine-tune their sense of color. The shape of the quilt block with intersecting planes is inspired by one of my favorite modern artists, Angela Johal who explores color relationships and creates 3D spaces on the flat surface of a canvas.
