Using solid cottons this quilt was carefully pieced to create 80 gores to mimic the Mars Rover parachute. Each was individually created to replicate precisely, ensuring that the message stayed intact. Using a code, the inner rings spell out Dare Mighty Things, the JPL motto, but also a personal mantra of mine. The outer ring is the GPS location of NASA’s JPL center in Southern California, near where I lived when creating this quilt. Working to create a perfect circle, with little room for error lest it become 3-D, was a challenge that I appreciated and circled back to the motto.
