In 1978 renowned multi-disciplinary artist Anni Albers created one of my most favorite geometric prints, Second Movement I. Each time I gaze at her piece, I am mesmerized by the illusion of local density that she created by strategically placing black and white squares among a field of randomly pointing HSTs. I was excited to bring my interpretation of her print to life using squares and rectangles, and four colors from this year’s palette. I purposely chose to pair colors of both similar and dissimilar color values to create three regions of local densities (blue background, white ring, and chartreuse center spot). To me, her print and my quilt aim to illustrate the beauty that can exist when those that seem quite different from one another, stand closely together, in pursuit of common interests. Moreover, how a mosaic of different populations can resonate in harmony when viewed from a different perspective.
