Displaying some color magic, the Red/Royal fabric in the given palette radiates an iridescence in violet hues. “Iridescence” shares its word origin with “iris” which, with a little non sequitur leap, became the literal subject of this quilt. The human iris is composed of two pigmented layers, rings which constrict to let less light into the eye, and radials which contract to open the pupil allowing more light in. The iris’ structure and function allow us to perceive the world around us with all of its wonderful shapes and colors. I am intrigued by the idea that each individual's irises are unique — more complex and unique than one’s fingerprints. Eyes not only allow us to see, but can reveal a multitude of emotions and stories -- like our quilts. ’My Wild Violet Eye' is offered as a visual homage to the complexity of human perception, both literally and figuratively.
