Pregnancy is a time to celebrate new life but unfortunately for far too many African American families it is a time to mourn the loss of life-the mother. African American women are 3x's more likely to die from maternal mortality. Hemorrhaging, preeclampsia, cesarean and structural racism are included as some of the factors that lead to the extremely high mortality rate. Two-thirds of the deaths were preventable. I created this piece to highlight this epidemic and to honor the mothers that have died far too soon!
