The design is a nod to books you can't put down, staying well past your bedtime with zero regrets. The upside down book can be seen as a flying book, or the passage of time when you're immersed in a story. From a practical perspective, the upside down book not only allowed me to make use of leftover half square triangle blocks, but also allowed the quilt to be turned upside down without affecting the design.
