The bright, saturated Windham Artisan Cottons immediately drew me to the colors of bubbles. I was transported to going outside to play with my children, blowing bubbles on our back patio. I wanted to capture the colors, the feelings, and the simplicity of this summertime activity. In order to make the curves, I used my preferred hand appliqué technique but at a very large scale. Using this construction method allowed me to have long, clean curves to shape the bubbles. For the quilting, I wanted the structure of horizontal straight lines, but added quilted “halos” around the bubbles to provide movement and the feeling that the bubbles may pop but their joyful impression is left behind. While the quilting is dense, the bubbles retain their airiness due to the use of negative space.
