As a trained fine artist, over the years my work has gravitated towards traditional folk and utilitarian art, prefering to create works that serve function as well as form. Born into a family of architects, my work reflects architectural and graphic design elements. The medium of quilting is my way of combining characteristics of printmaking, color theory and graphic design into a functional piece of art. My quilts begin as a drawing on paper. Each stage of the quilting process adds a literal layer and depth to the drawing. I use black and white shape first to create movement while the piecing process adds texture and line to an otherwise white on white design. The quilting process adds a tactile element that is inspired by my past experiences with printmaking. Structure and precision fuel my work. The thoughtful placement of a seam satisfies my need for perfection and control.
