The Marylhurst School is an independent, progressive education community. The school's mission is to encourage children to develop a foundation for lifelong learning, problem-solving, and working within a diverse community. The 2nd and 3rd grade class (collectively known as the Meadowlarks) studied the Indigenous Peoples of North America. They researched environmental impacts on the way people native to our continent traditionally lived and how natural resources played a role in the development of culture. They learned about the cruelty and atrocities that Native Peoples endured as a result of white settlers in this new land. Meadowlarks ended the term with an understanding of who was here first and an appreciation of the dark history of where they call home. Should this quilt win an award, the monies will be donated to the Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde, as it is their land that the Marylhurst School is located on.
