In art, negative space is the empty space around a subject. It can be most evident when the space around the subject forms the relevant shape. Here, the names of the 19 children and two teachers who died at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas create an outline of the Daniel Defense DDM4 rifle used in the mass shooting. The negative space cuts off each name just as the gun was used to prematurely cut off each life. Such a large, deadly weapon is incongruous with the school setting, which is suggested by the lined notebook paper background, a pink eraser border, and the elementary teacher-style handwriting.
