Colors have conversations with one another. They exist in relationships. Colors have personalities that are enhanced or diminished, depending on their combination. Everything is relative. One whispers if another shouts. This quilt offers a modern take on a traditional star block, with a distinct center that is surrounded by exaggerated, elongated offshoot points that are pieced from thin strips of hand-dyed linen. Asymmetrical and uneven, the massive star is a stylized variant of a traditionally delicate and balanced shape. At the center, black and white half square triangle blocks draw the eye. But for me, color is the emotional actor - turquoise and mustards share are tonal equals and clash, but neither dominates. This is an experiment to see which holds the viewer’s focus: the high contrast of black and white, or the tension of hue and tone. There is a visual tug-of-war.
