The volcano that formed the Yellowstone caldera extruded rhyolite, a silica rich rock. Rhyolite is found in shades of grey, tan and pink. Of all its shades, I feel most attracted to the pink tones found in the Yellowstone River gorge. After years ignoring color, I shifted from black and white, landscape photography to quilting. Creating this piece turned out to be a journey through a portal. It sums up my journey from photographer to quilter. From focusing on the design elements of light and shape, to also incorporating color.
