Optional Supplies: Masking Tape or Bandage to protect the nail from scratching by needles.

Learn the Core & Essence of Sashiko stitching from a Japanese Sashiko artisan. Sashiko stitching uses unique tools such as a long & small-eye needle, a round palm thimble, and a specific thread. Students will learn how to use those tools with the appropriate posture (Kata) and will aim to learn the “rhythm” of Sashiko with intensive stitching practice in this six-hour workshop. Sashiko is not about making one perfect stitch. It is about communicating to the fabric by moving the needles at your own pace. Once students learn how to move the needle, they can enjoy the beautiful results as even stitches. This class is a learning opportunity rather than a “let’s do sashiko together” workshop. Prior Sashiko/hand-stitching experience is not required. Students will learn the core and essence of Sashiko - such as needle movement (運針 - Unshin) and make beautiful sashiko stitches as the results of the rhythm — while sharing the Sashiko stories.
