DES015SatEve - Watercolor to Quilt: Negative Space Mapping a Melody
Saturday, February 24, 2024
6:00pm – 9:00pm East Coast USA Time
Member Price until Nov. 30: $96.00
Non-Member Price: $120.00
NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Sold Out?: Yes
Required Supplies: - An original abstract watercolor painting you want to translate into quilt form (more instruction will be shared at a later date on how to do this, and some kits that include all of the supplies you need for the workshop will be available for purchase as well)
- Fabric in a smooth range of colors that match your painting. Play with the painting step until you find a fun arrangement you’d like to turn into quilt form. Then select fabrics in colors that match your painting. Bring a 12” x 12” piece of each fabric to be sure to have room for experimentation. Kitty loves working with solids for this, but you’re welcome to be adventurous with prints if that’s where your heart lies!
- Background fabric, 16” x 16” in white or black or another solid color that highly contrasts with your design.
- Blue painter’s tape. Kitty will have extra if needed.
- Fusible interfacing. Kitty uses Heat n bond LITE (the one in the purple package). The 17” x 1.25 yards package might be the smallest option, and will be plenty. If purchasing by the yard a 1/2 yard will be ample!
- Freezer paper - 14” x 14” square
- Pencil - Kitty uses a regular number 2 pencil!
- Scissors suitable for cutting paper (for cutting through the freezer paper and fusible interfacing once fused) but also sharp enough to cut fabric smoothly. Shared scissors will be provide but you may wish to bring your own to maximize class time.
- Small portable design wall or something to transport your small cut pieces from your table to the ironing station. This can be anything from a 12” x 12” ruler, a piece of cardboard wrapped in a scrap of batting, or a wool pressing mat (this is ideal, since then you can press right onto it!)
Optional Supplies: Quilting ruler - Kitty suggests 6” x 12”
Prep Requirements: Students will be doing the watercolor step at home before QuiltCon. An instructional video that walks you through the process of painting abstract designs with negative space to make them sing will be shared a few months before QuiltCon so you have plenty of time to play and experiment before class. Kits will also be available for the intrepid painters among us, though Kitty encourages you to play with watercolor even if it's outside your comfort zone!
Delve into the layers of your creativity with this fun exploration of moving from watercolor painting to applique quilt. Kitty will guide students through the process of translating a unique watercolor painting into mini quilt form using fusible raw edge applique. With very clear guidance every step of the way, there will be a special focus and reflection on how the use of negative space helps make these quilts sing. With particular attention to color gradients and flow, students will delight in the creative doors that are opened through learning this technique. No prior painting experience necessary, and some samples will be available for the trepid painters among us.
