NOTE: Materials fees are required for some workshops. These fees are paid directly to faculty and are not part of your registration fee. Sold Out?: Yes
Required Supplies: - Up to four fat quarters for background fabrics. You can make a sampler with a patchwork of different backgrounds or one big background – that’s a design choice!
- An assortment of charm squares, layer cake squares, or fat quarters for applique shapes. Bring enough that you are comfortable with the choices you have, but aren’t overwhelmed by them. Ginny suggests the equivalent of one yard of scraps or one gallon bag of scraps for class.
- Fabric scissors - You’ll be cutting applique shapes, so Ginny doesn’t recommend scissors that are very big or very small – choose a pair that you can hold easily for a while as you cut out round shapes. Shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize class time.
- School or quilt glue stick - Any school glue stick will work, but Ginny highly recommends the thin ones Sewline and Fons & Porter make – they have extra tacky glue, which makes the process so much easier!
- Microtex (preferably) or universal needle; preferably size 60, but that can be hard to find, so 70 works great as well
- Thread color(s) of your choice. If you’d like to avoid the hassle of bringing a spool to match every fabric you have, bring a medium gray.
- Sketching materials (choose ONE option or the other): --Option 1: drawing utensils (pen, pencil, markers, colored pencils – your choice) and paper for taking notes, sketching ideas, and cutting out test shapes --Option 2: an iPad (or equivalent) with a design app you like and are already comfortable using
In this workshop, quiltmakers will learn ways to create their own appliqué shapes and designs by using design thinking techniques (ideate, design, test, edit) and then sewing the shapes they create to make their own unique blocks. We will cover which appliqué techniques work best with a particular design, the ways that color creates surprise or cohesion in a design, and the potential for blocks to tell a story and evoke emotion. This class is designed for intermediate quilters, but quilters with a basic knowledge of machine or hand sewing are welcome! Sewing machines generously provided by event sponsors!
