Minimal improv is an intuitive piecing process that utilizes familiar and traditional block styles as accents while avoiding overly symmetrical or repetitive piecing. While many styles of improv quilting aim to reduce scraps from previous projects, this process focuses on intentional fabric pulls, that can be scraps or yardage already in your stash, to create balanced and cohesive statements. Students will avoid over-congestion and maximalism by choosing lower-volume fabrics and by buffering pieced elements from one another much like traditional sashing does for individual blocks. During this 3-hour workshop, students will create small wall hangings using design walls to outline their construction. Students should come prepared with a basic understanding of improv quilting and an ability to work without patterns or fabric placement guidelines.
