de Colores’ is a traditional Spanish folk song that celebrates the vibrant beauty that exists within nature amid its many glorious colors. The song encourages: celebration of uniqueness, reverence for one another, and propensity toward a more diverse, harmonious world. In early 2020, I was fortunate to receive two sets of solid cotton scraps; 730 two-inch squares, remnants of Ben Millet’s ‘Coat of 365 Colors.’ For a child who was limited to 24 crayons in elementary school, I was both hypnotized by their splendor and determined to design a piece worthy of their use. My design aims to exemplify the allure of diverse colors comingling. Rows were arranged with complementary-colored scraps converging in value. Rows were stacked to produce contrasting-colored columns. My goal: a multicolored grid that reverberates and captivates in its celebration of color. … y por eso los grandes amores de muchos colores me gustan a mí.
