At the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, W.E.B. Du Bois and his colleagues presented a series of visualizations telling the story of African American life following the end of slavery. They are incredibly striking designs, combining a vivid color palette in novel ways to depict a rich history. I first became aware of them after seeing a cross stitch sampler designed by Shaded Stitchery. After discovering the source material, many of the visualizations felt like they would lend themselves perfectly to a quilt. This quilt is based on the chart titled, "Occupations of Negroes and whites in Georgia."
