Bias, the cutting of woven fabric on a diagonal to give more pliability and elasticity, can also describe the tendency to favor something based on personal feelings, beliefs, or intuition. My bee-mates were sent three random solid colors from a blind palette of twelve that I’d selected for this project. Allowing for the use of unlimited fabrics, but only ones of similar hue and value to their assigned three, each maker was prompted to create a 14”x28” panel inspired by their favorite abstract artist or artwork. “Be forewarned!” I advised, “I plan to cut up your panels.” My goal was to chop, turn, sew, and resew my bee-mate’s panels into an interwoven collage that captivates, while preserving the identity of each maker’s original make; allowing the best of each to shine. There’s a joy in imposing one’s bias toward the elevation of all. Please ask to see the back!
