in· ter· sti· tial : occurring in or being an interval or intervening space or segment This quilt started as an exploration of the spaces between basic elements; looking at what happens in the interaction of those elements, as opposed to focusing on the elements themselves. What I discovered was an amazing play that takes place - shapes come forward, highlighted with the quilting, and interact with each other, creating movement and texture with a complexity that’s unexpected from such simple starting shapes. Using layered applique techniques to create the shapes allowed for the shapes to sit below the surface of the quilt, adding a subtleness to the shapes that was not achievable through other techniques attempted.
