The quilt design is a reflection of growth and new beginnings. It is also an homage to a printmaking and collage artist, Julia Lucey, who I came across a few years ago and whose enchanting work has captivated me. One of the things that fascinate me about Julia’s work is that she creates shapes through changes in color while the monochromatic patterns from the prints keep flowing through the whole piece. This inspired the fabric choice and placement in this quilt: prints in three colorways are used to create a circular motif through color contrast while the (fabric) print pattern extends across the shapes. A version of the circular motif in solid fabrics serves as a contrast point. I used extensive free motion quilting in the plain back to add yet another layer to the quilt.
