A work made by a human. This is a reproduction of an original work titled Shape Studies:039 by the Canadian artist and graphic designer Ray Dal Lam, who agreed on a collaboration for me to translate a couple of his digital pieces into analog textile art. The exercise was to find the right balance between the tendency of looking to do perfect stitch each time and the fact that irregularities are key on this piece. The quilting joins the movement of the objects in the space taking the viewer on a spiraling trip to the center and back to the white, clean space. This quilt is pieced in a ‘traditional way’ and the calculations in the design to utilize the fabrics in the most efficient way, avoiding waste, required an amount of math I never thought I’d use in my life. Fun!
