Improv-pieced traditional quilts are my most favorite quilts to create. For this quilt I focused on variable stars and wonky log cabins. The centerpiece of the quilt is the large star with the log cabin center. The colors in this unit became the palette for the rest of the quilt. Each star and log cabin are improv-pieced, which allowed me to experiment with different techniques to make each block. My biggest challenge was creating stars and log cabins of the same size without measuring and cutting with a ruler. When composing the quilt, I grouped the main colors of the blocks together. I quilted on my mid-arm using 40 wt thread using the main color for eacj section. I also changed the direction of the straight line quilting to provide visual interest.
