With this quilt called ‘Sewing Circle’ I chose to honor my artistic “ancestors” by inviting them to a imaginary sewing circle in the log cabin. Through my quilting, I feel the privilege of being connected to many generations of women quilters all over the world. When I look at historical quilts and more recent quilts, I see in the work how that quilter is exploring color, scale or composition in a way that also interests me in my work. Quilters build upon and continue the artistic exploration of others in many ways. This connection is deeply meaningful to me. The circular element on the quilt represents the power, support, companionship and artistic exploration generated by coming together for the sewing circle (both real and imagined). All you need to be invited into the circle is your thimble and your fabric scraps. Both these elements are featured on my quilt.
