This quilt started as a pencil sketch of eight cragged lines that echo off each other. The resulting shape feels organic, like a path of a river bed or a crack in the earth. I knew I wanted to create each pathway of color out of a continuous cut of fabric so that there were no seams. I enlarged my initial sketch to create templates I could use to cut my large pieces of fabric. I pieced the strips together using a combination of machine piecing and hand sewing when the curves became too tight to accurately maneuver under the machine. I quilted the negative space with a heavy black thread, echoing the cragged pathway and then eventually flattening out to be near straight. I also added what I call "tick marks" for further visual interest with a zigzag stitch in random places along the quilted lines.
